Questions and our research from the podcast:

1. How has the rise of smartphones changed the way students manage or fail to manage their time?

Structural Relationship among Mobile Phone Dependence, Self-Efficacy, Time Management Disposition, and Academic Procrastination in College Students

“While students affected by academic procrastination typically exhibit the intention and tendency to learn, they do not show behavior consistent with their intentions in actual learning settings.”

“Research has demonstrated that overuse of mobile phones among college students can also lead to boredom with academic work and a serious tendency to procrastinate.”

2. Why do students with already overwhelming schedules turn to social media as a “break,” even when it makes their workload feel worse?

Why Are We Distracted by Social Media? Distraction Situations and Strategies, Reasons for Distraction, and Individual Differences

“One explanation for why users engage in social media instead of ignoring it when engaged in a task, may be a failure of self-control”

“For instance, research has found that students cannot focus for long on a task such as studying, and that, on average, they switch to social media after about six minutes of focused work”

3. Is procrastination through social media a form of self‑sabotage or just poor time management?

From Doomscrolling to Productivity: Navigating Self-Sabotage in Education | Applied Social Psychology (ASP) - The Pennsylvania State University

"Productivity is traded for procrastination. It happens to the best of us. Although social media seems like harmless entertainment and a good distraction from the stress of an arduous task, procrastinating is self-handicapping"

5. How does doom-scrolling blur the line between relaxation and avoidance?

How Self-Handicapping can affect your education. | Applied Social Psychology (ASP) - The Pennsylvania State University

"In Zuckerman, Kieffer, and Knee (1998) study on college students found self-handicapping correlated to lower GPAs, less time working on academics and less exam preparation (Gruman et al, 2016, p. 447). This shows how much of a negative impact can have on students' academics performance, so why do students keep self-handicapping? A study conducted by Elliot and Church (2003) found self-handicapping was positively correlated with the fear of failure but negatively correlated with achievement needs. This may explain why students continuously self-handicap as they are scared, they will fail regardless and do not have the motivated to achieve high grades."

6. Do social media platforms intentionally make it harder for students to stay focused?

“...TikTok offers instant gratification with variable rewards—sometimes you get a hilarious video, sometimes something mediocre, but you never know what’s coming next. This unpredictability is precisely what makes it so addictive."

"Research on social media’s impact on reward circuitry suggests that this constant stimulation can actually alter our brain’s baseline expectations for engagement. We’ve essentially trained our brains to expect entertainment every few seconds, making slower-paced activities—like reading a book or having an uninterrupted conversation—feel unbearably tedious by comparison.”

7. What role do notifications play in breaking students’ concentration throughout the day?

- Phantom notifications (brain searching for dopamine you get after receiving a notification)
- Buzzing grabs attention → encourages them to see who or what it is
- Once you check, you may want to reply or do something else on your phone
