Abstract/Pitch

Abstract/ Pitch  My audience is college students at Syracuse University, specifically freshmen and sophomores. This group is constantly forced to manage their time and combat numerous hours of homework per week, and my results are about their experiences. My goal is to get them to help me with my primary research. I put it in the explanation of a Google survey that I gave to some of my friends. I put numerous questions on there to help gain information for my topic and strengthen my claim.  Pitch: How do you usually spend your time? My research is focused on determining how college students are being treated within Syracuse University. I want to know if students struggle because of a lack of time management skills or because the enormity of work being assigned is unattainable. I believe that it is a mix of both that causes excess stress within people's lives. As a college student, I understand how endless work feels, and I think it has a large part to do with people's m...

Research Questions

Research Questions:  1.  When is an acceptable age for independent technology to be introduced to developing children? 2.  How do think other lifestyles in varying countries differ from our own, and how does this affect people's mental health? 3.  How does experiencing other cultures impact our growth?  Reflection: I asked some of my friends and family these questions and they had many varying answers. For the first one my parents said that they gave my siblings and I phones when they thought it was important. They said we often got home before them when I was around 11 and therefore we needed a phone to be able to communicate. However, when I talked to my aunt she said she didn't want to get my cousin a phone, who is 7, until much later in his life. She is scared about the impacts of technology on their attention span. The second question I asked one of my friends who is an international student and she said that other countries in Europe have a much bet...

Unit 1 Reflection

Unit 1 Reflection      I feel like my curated sources are of decent quality, however, I could have found more scholarly sources rather than just peoples opinions if I was going for more factual information. For this project I was more looking for people’s personal accounts of inquiry and how they used it in their daily lives and for their projects. My first source was the most scholarly and was given to me from this class, “A Pencil Shop, For Texting, The Old Fashioned Way” by Molly Young. This source mentioned things like “If you make a purchase (and it’s hard not to, given that you can pay with pocket change), your goods will be wrapped in a box and tied up with string.” This was more informal of a style and made the writing feel more personal, but also less reliable due to the lack of formality. I noticed it used a lot of pathos to make the story feel more relatable and engaging. My second source “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” by Rian Johnson focused more o...

Unit 1 Portfolio

Source Analysis #1: "A Pencil Shop, for Texting the Old Fashioned Way" by Molly Young, Published by The New York Times The author decided to take on this project to represent the metaphor of every writer having their own specialized style. This is represented through the pencil shop as each person who comes in has their own specialized pencil representing themselves as a writer. The genre is a narrative style article, as the author is telling a story about this shop that only sells pencils to convey a deeper meaning. This source fits into the larger conversation of my topic of inquiry through searching for the underlying meaning rather than taking it at face value. Although the author sounds as if they are just talking about a pencil shop, it is important to ask questions about why and what the writing devices they use represent. I think it did a good job getting across its message through different literary devices such as similes and metaphors. The author uses informal dia...
