Reddit Reflection

Artifact #1:

Flashback! The Internet In 1995 | Archives | TODAY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95-yZ-31j9A

This source is an original report on when computers and the internet were beginning to become popular. One statement I found interesting was when one of the reporters said, "Isn't it crazy that people are talking to people they don't know?" In modern times, this isn't even a question, as people make friends or start dating people from apps that they would have never met without the internet.

Artifact #2:

Early 1990's Internet Commercial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1_yx_Eg9v4

This source is an original commercial from the 90s that is advertising the use of the internet. While the previous source was being critical, this one is praising it and encouraging people to give it a try. It emphasizes how useful and helpful the internet can be, as well as how to use it in your own life. However, it also somewhat shows how reliant people can become on the internet while also trying to completely frame it in a positive light.

Artifact #3:

Reddit Requests
https://www.reddit.com/r/redditrequest/

This source is directly from Reddit and is a space where people can request a Reddit moderator for different conversations and communities. This page has many different fandoms that paste a link and request assistance in taking back their community. There are numerous subjects with links attached that attempt to bring order to this lawless platform where anyone can say what they want anonymously.
Episode:

In this episode, there was a clear discussion on what Reddit is and why people use it. It is often used as a space to discuss certain fandoms and numerous situations that people find themselves in, and ask for help. However, there are also other spaces of Reddit that spew hateful messages, and because of the anonymity, people aren't held accountable. In the podcast, they stated that "by doing these things, they are fulfilling their purpose." The podcast explains that these people believe that it is their purpose to troll on the internet and say horrendous messages. They said the best way to combat these types of people is to "puncture their beliefs and show them how they are ridiculous. " Through embarrassing them on their own platform, you can reduce their stance, so it is important to call out bad behavior.

Claim about Reddit:

I believe that social media can be beneficial for spreading messages and connecting on a large scale, including Reddit. I think anonymity can cause problems because people believe they can no longer be held accountable for their actions. So I think there always needs to be some built-in measure of accountability in order to keep these spaces safe and prevent mental harm to the users. These sources helped me to realize that the internet is constantly evolving and growing so it is important that we don't let it consume us.
