Unit 1 Reflection

 Unit 1 Reflection

I feel like my curated sources are of decent quality, however, I could have found more scholarly sources rather than just peoples opinions if I was going for more factual information. For this project I was more looking for people’s personal accounts of inquiry and how they used it in their daily lives and for their projects. My first source was the most scholarly and was given to me from this class, “A Pencil Shop, For Texting, The Old Fashioned Way” by Molly Young. This source mentioned things like “If you make a purchase (and it’s hard not to, given that you can pay with pocket change), your goods will be wrapped in a box and tied up with string.” This was more informal of a style and made the writing feel more personal, but also less reliable due to the lack of formality. I noticed it used a lot of pathos to make the story feel more relatable and engaging. My second source “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” by Rian Johnson focused more on the story-telling aspect. It had intricate dialogue and visuals that made you think about what the director was trying to convey. This made it feel like a more informative source because you had to be more intuitive rather than just being told. My third source “How, Might You…? (The Magic of Might)” by David Shaked was more inquisitive, but also felt a bit repetitive at times. He was passionate about what vocabulary we use when talking to ourselves and how much that can affect your attitude. He would ask his listeners “What might you do?” rather than “what will you do?” in order to emphasize that the words you say matter. He was a good quality source for feelings and subjective information, but he didn’t have clear facts or knowledge on psychology. My fourth and final source was the YouTube video “If Students Designed Their Own Schools” by Charles Tsai, which I found myself questioning if this was a real program at first. But, the further I looked into it I was able to confirm it was real. This proves that the source itself wasn’t high quality, but it did have valuable information on how students themselves can take control of their learning.

I used technology a lot throughout the curation of all of my sources. For instance I used my computer to find and receive my sources. Technology helped me have access to a wide variety of mediums such as podcasts, YouTube videos, articles, and movies. I think my sources are of good quality, but could be more reliable if I looked at databases from the Syracuse University library. For this project I mainly focused on looking at any sources that I thought were interesting and still fell in the bounds of inquiry. However, for my next project I will look at better sources and pick a topic that I can dive deeper into. This topic I can make it so it requires more factual information than opinion base. Some holes I can see in my project is that I lack specifically how all of these sources relate to one another not just through mentioning inquiry.

I think that I will probably look for another overarching topic, and I don’t know if I will use any of these sources. I feel like these sources were a good starting point, but I think I want to dive deeper into more scholarly sources. These sources were interesting because they were of a great variety, and I loved getting to understand each genre better. For assignment 2 I know we will have to gather a series of sources that relate to an overarching thesis. I think for this assignment I will want to pick a topic that I’m very interested in so it will make researching it more fun. For assignment 3 I know we will have to create a project using some sort of technological way with another overarching theme. This will help me learn how to represent my findings visually as well as through written responses. This assignment I’m looking forward to because I do feel like I am a visual learner rather than an oral learner. I challenged myself with this project through using diverse sources from numerous different genres. I also have never published a blog before so that was a bit challenging at first. In addition to this it was difficult to narrow down sources, but eventually I was able to pick the ones that I found the most compelling.
